No wonder we rank next to used car salesmen...
August 28, 2006
Did you ever have one of those days that YOU JUST WANTED TO SCREAM! I'm having one. Watch out.The real estate profession lacks professionalism. Why is this? Too many people in this business that don't understand "professionalism?" What is professionalism anyway? Subject of another article. People in our business just don't get it.
Why the used car salesmen? Because we act like one. Fast talking. High pressure. Looking for the quick buck. If I don't sell to you I'll sell to someone else attitude. No follow up. Slick. Clueless. Short term motivated. Get a good deal but you have to buy these other services and products I offer. On and on and on...So, what has set me off? AGENTS THAT DO NOT RETURN MY PHONE CALLS REQUESTING FEEDBACK ON MY LISTINGS THAT THEY SHOWED TO A CLIENT!!!!! It's a professional courtesy dammit! (8 out of 10 don't return calls).
NOTICE: I want to be your broker so I can fire you!
Alternative business models will succeed because we cannot find our way. Not open, too protective, reluctant to set the bar higher for licenses resulting in marginal people in our business, slow to innovate and prefer to fight legal battles instead of listening to the consumer. Go figure.

Cont. Some loan officers actually sell cars by day and loans by night. I don't hate loan officers, just don't respect those that only do refi's. Lar again.
You don't rank second. Loan officers do. Lar

Bad day?: An understatement. A freaking horrible day. And, I feel better for yelling. Thanks for noticing.
Agreed on all fronts. Sorry you were having such a day.
As a leader myself, let me just say the problem is apathy from the Members first, and the leadership second. I was counting down the days unitl I'd no longer be president of my Association, couldn't wait to crack open a six pack of beer, or mix a cocktail or two, or even chug a bottle of bubbly.
Lately though, I think that I should strive further along in leadership. Perhaps involve myself more at the state level. Why?? Because I mostly agree with what you wrote in this article.
Now, I'm not sure I'm the exact right person for the job... but I don't know that I could point to the right person.
This isn't about protecting our profession, it's about improving it on behalf of our clients and ourselves. However I can say any battle would be long and difficult, and that my name could be mud in a mere second. Brokers that make up most of the leadership are into protecting 'theirs' and simply will not give someone like me the time of day.
I've battled my local brokers and have had to recently challenge them and their ways. I've had to ask them to step up to the issues that face my Association. I called for a brokers council meeting for counsel from the participants of the MLS for Association issues. 11 out of a possible 63 showed up for that meeting. Not very inspiring.
We seem to say it's too easy to get a license and enter this profession. I'll agree to a point. However I truly believe it's too easy to become a broker and there are too many bad brokers now, and all seemingly wanting to protect 'theirs'.
The broker model needs to be challenged. May not need to be changed, but a challenge is long overdue. If not for the mere purpose of slapping some in the broker field back to reality.
Don't take an agent just because he/she has a license and a heartbeat. Unless of course you intend to help them become an asset to our profession, to our Association, and to your business.
It is not my job as an Association president to teach newbie's how it's done, it's the brokers job. That job is not being met and many are suffering because of it.
Sorry to ramble, maybe I'm having one of those days as well.
Bad day? :)
